Ring Out

Feedback Eliminator for Live Audio

Ring Out is built for ringing out wedges and a PA before soundcheck. Arm LEARN, bring the gain up slowly, and let it notch the frequencies that start to ring; then disarm it and keep the notches for the show. Keep a mute within reach while you do it: a ring can grow faster than any detector can react.

Ring Out is open source under GPL-3.0-or-later. View the source, report issues, or contribute on GitHub.

Features

  • LEARN: arm the detector for 60 seconds while you raise the gain, and it places a notch on each ring it hears
  • CATCH: one press places or deepens one notch on the next ring, for the ring that turns up mid-show
  • Up to twenty narrow notches in a bank of strips, each with on/off, its own CUT fader, frequency, and Q
  • A ring that comes back deepens or widens its existing notch instead of taking a new slot
  • Tells a ring from a note by how it behaves: feedback holds or grows, a note decays, and harmonic-rich sounds are passed over
  • Two sensitivity settings: Low for conservative detection, High for quieter rings and faster response
  • Stereo detection that a ring in one channel or opposite-polarity signals cannot hide from
  • Q SCALE and CUT TRIM across every notch
  • LINK trades output level for cut depth, so turning up also deepens the notches
  • Spectrum display with the notch curve: drag a notch's node for frequency and cut, wheel for Q
  • A ripple on the graph marks each notch the detector places or deepens
  • Input and output level meters with peak hold
  • Notches fade in and out smoothly, with no clicks when filters change or on bypass
  • User presets that store the filter table with the settings
  • Typed value entry for each notch's cut, frequency, and Q
  • Host automation of Sensitivity, Learn, Catch, Clear, Q Scale, Cut Trim, Link, and Output

Changelog

v1.1.0 2026-10-12

  • New editor: a full-width graph where each notch is a numbered node you can drag (frequency, cut, wheel for Q), with a callout on the selected notch and a ripple where the detector places one
  • Notch bank with a cut fader per notch, plus frequency, cut and Q steppers with typed entry for the selected notch
  • Round LEARN button with a countdown ring, HOLD TO CATCH, and RING NOT COVERED shown in red
  • Controls renamed to match the editor: Sensitivity, Learn, Catch, Clear, Q Scale, Cut Trim, Output; existing sessions and automation load unchanged
  • Larger, easier-to-read editor (1040 x 640)

v1.0.0 2026-10-07

  • First release of Ring Out, a feedback eliminator for ringing out monitors and PA
  • SETUP listens for 60 seconds and notches each ring it hears; ADD catches one more ring on demand
  • Up to twenty editable notch filters, with global Q and depth trims and a LINK between output gain and cut depth
  • Low and High sensitivity; stereo detection that a ring in one channel cannot hide from
  • AU, VST3, CLAP and LV2 for Linux (x64, arm64), Windows and macOS (universal)
